Why, hello Scorching Summer! Wanted to join the party early this year, we see?

The calendar says the first day of summer is June 21, but, whew, this heat wave that hit the South in late May has been a doozie!

So with a fan blowing in our face and a cool drink in our hand, it's time to post our annual reminder on how to ramp up our precautionary measures and be safe and healthy during this hot season.

You can always find great tips on The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) website, including:
  • Drink more liquid than you think you need and avoid alcohol.
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing and a hat.
  • Replace salt lost from sweating by drinking fruit juice or sports drinks.
  • Avoid spending time outdoors during the hottest part of the day, from 11am to 3pm.
  • Wear sunscreen; sunburn affects the body's ability to cool itself.
  • Pace yourself when you run or otherwise exert your body.

Another CDC article contains good info about the effects of extreme heat on our bodies.

From an overall lifestyle perspective, we love this article from WebMD: 8 Summer Steps for Healthy Living. Many of the steps mentioned in the article can start any time of year, but it certainly can't hurt to try some new healthy habits over the more-relaxed summer months!

Stay safe out there and have a COOL summer!
